Chapter Seven

Eve

“What do you mean you went onto his property?” Becky’s voice is grizzled and angry. “You’re going to lose your job. One call to the region and he’ll have you fired. He probably has cameras all over.”

“I know, it was dumb. I don’t know what got into me. I just… I needed to see him again. It’s like I’m sick, Becky. I’m thinking about him from the second I wake up until I go to bed at night. Even then, I dream about his big, strong arms holding me close, wrapping me up, protecting me from everything and everyone.”

“What did you do?” Her tone is darker than I was expecting.

“I just wanted to look inside the cabin to see anything, something that would keep me from thinking of him, but I tripped on a branch in the snow and fell into a snowbank next to his bedroom window.”

Becky laughs loud and hysterical without regret. “You’re kidding, right? What did you do after that? Why didn’t you call me? I can’t believe you’ve just been sitting on this all weekend!”

I shake my head. “I can’t stop thinking about the look on his face when he saw me. It was this cross between betrayal and desire. Like he wanted to pull me into the cabin and chase me away all at once. Becky, I feel awful. I should at least send him a letter to apologize.”

Her jaw drops and her eyes go wide. “God, I don’t even want to tell you what came for you today after this story.” She pulls a letter from her back pocket and hands it toward me, pulling it away before I can grasp it. “Promise me. Promise me… you’re not going to write back. Whatever he says… it’s over. You can’t go back up there. You can’t write him. You can’t do anything but thank the heavens he’s given you the mercy he’s offered you.” She hands the letter back toward me. “Seriously.”

My heart pounds as I reach for the letter, tearing it open like a child on Christmas morning. It could be anything: a list of threats, a proper warning, a realization of what I’d written in my letter to him two days ago. I look at Becky’s wide eyes as I begin to read aloud.
